This is a slightly processed field recording from 1982 when I worked at BRESCO... the Baltimore Refuse Energy Systems Company. I worked as a crane operator running a huge overhead crane that fed trash from Baltimore households into a large furnace that used the heat to drive steam turbines which in turn drove electrical generators. I only worked there during the time they were testing the systems, and this is a recording of a test of the Von Roll Grate system, which mechanically shifted the raked/stepped surface of the interior of the furnace to move the incinerated material slowly from one side of the furnace to the other. The inside of the furnace was enormous and the sound was spectacular. This was recorded on a hand-held stereo cassette recorder.
